Where We Left Off:
Oliver discovered the tragic murder of our first rat resident, Nicodemus. The detectives worked hard to solve the case that had many suspects.
Grey Man:
It was nearly time for me to wake up. I would have loved another 30-45 minutes. Gus had an urgent matter at 04:33 AM that required immediate attention. A week had gone by since Gus and Ollie’s abuela passed away to a place without pain. Those couple of weeks prior took a lot of time, energy, and traveling across New Jersey (for the humans). I would have loved more sleep when Gus delivered a small Unsub to me.
I saw a critter scurry by the little bit of ambient light from a salt lamp on the floor. It was an adorably tiny grey mouse. Gus circled around. I’m not sure why he insists on letting his captors go. A dog wouldn’t do that. Have you ever tried to get a ball away from a dog? Yet, when Gus gets an outside critter like a chipmunk, and I do want him to release it, he won’t. He wants to carry those back towards the house as a spectacular gift to the humans. I don’t fault him. I only wish his strategies for indoor versus outdoor critters were reversed.
There we were on the floor again. The grey mouse was going to hide, but it wasn’t in a hurry. He climbed up my slippers, up my tote bag, and then started up the blankets of the bed. No! Nope! No way! I told him. In fact, it was shocking how easily I put the critter into the glass relocation jar. Normally, mice who have a full life bar are still able to run, climb, and jump. I was in that mode, expecting the mouse to leap out any second. Instead, I was able to put the wooden top on the containment device. The incident was over remarkably fast.
It was even easier for me because The Butler was here. He offered to handle all of the logistics taking the Unsub into the Witness Relocation Program. When he returned, the cat detectives and I were ready for a debriefing meeting.
Who Was This Grey Man?
A grey man operates outside the accepted laws of their community. They’re not good nor bad. They can justify doing bad things for the sake of something that benefits or helps the community or an individual. They’re also paid or bartered for their services. You might think of them as chaotic neutral.
The way this mouse didn’t put up a fight told us that he was likely between assignments when Ollie and Gus spotted him trying to live a life that doesn’t draw attention.
Gus and Ollie did have time to interrogate the Unsub before he was taken for relocation.
Name: unknown
Occupation: Grey Man
Last Assignment: Protecting a young mouse and escorting her through the house’s many treacherous passageways after her mother was killed. The young mouse is expected to live a life of freedom.
Case Findings:
Oliver and Gus captured a Grey Man, a mouse with a particular set of skills who will break any law in order to successfully complete an assignment. This Grey Man was relaxing after a successful mission when the cat detectives caught him and delivered him to the humans. The Grey Man was turned over to the Butler and entered into the Witness Relocation Program. His whereabouts are presently unknown although we did obtain video footage from a few days earlier and a few days after showing that this Grey Man probably decided to escape the safety of relocation and come back to the Winchester-Nabu estate for another assignment. Gus and Ollie did their jobs, but they may have to do them again on the same Unsub.
Case Status: Closed
Notes:
Unsub is FBI lingo for “unknown subject” similar to suspect or perpetrator, but without being absolutely certain.
